The Possibility of Kanye 2020

The Possibility of Kanye 2020

Hot out of the 2016 presidential election, there have been many different rumors circulating about possible 2020 election candidates in the Democratic party. We have our expected politicians, like Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker, but we also have celebrities hoping to follow in the footsteps of actor-turned-politician, Arnold Schwarzeneggar. One of the celebrities who has voiced his desire for a possible presidential campaign is none other than rap artist, Kanye West. He claims that he “[doesn’t have] views on politics, only a view on humanity, on people and on the truth.” However, at MTV’s 2015 VMA’s, West was quoted saying, “Yes, as you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided to run for president in 2020.” Although West has publically supported President-elect Trump, West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, has mentioned that she believes her husband would run as a democrat due to the beliefs of their family. With no sitting president running for election, the Democratic nomination is, indeed, up for grabs. West would have a better chance to secure the Presidency running as a Democrat than directly challenging Trump in the Republican primary, assuming Trump chooses to run for re-election in 2020.

Along with West, other high profile celebrities, such as Dwayne Johnson and Chris Rock, have voiced their interest in the Presidency. Does this mean that D.C. is soon to be infiltrated with celebrities? As a student, I hope not! Although some may fancy the idea of a White House that is not run by politicians, most celebrities lack the foreign policy expertise necessary to uphold the United States’ intricate web of international relations. While someone, such as West, may have the fame and influence equal to  that of a President (perhaps even more), they most likely will not be as qualified of a candidate as politicians who have been contributing to the welfare of Americans for years, both in their home state and from capitol hill.

Of course, that isn’t to say that it would be impossible for a celebrity to be a good commander-in-chief for the United States. I am a strong believer that many have the full potential of becoming amazing leaders that can be great role models. All I, and many other millennials, ask is that our presidents are respectable leaders who can improve the lives of all Americans. With that said, we have another three years to wait and see if Kanye means what he says about running for president in 2020.
